Here are some of my images from college.

I have been lucky enough to returned to education as a mature student to study fabric design. In the past have made my own clothes, knitted garments and altered clothes to make them up to date or look different. Always taken an interest in fashion, fabric and the construction of garments. Also attended a jewellery design and making course working in silver and gold and still wearing some of my pieces today but gave most of them away as presents ! Spent alot of time restoring old furniture for my home instead of buying new and had some unique stuff !!

Data Jewellery

Came across these cuffs on the Internet. Thought they were interesting enough for the Data brief. How to incorporate Data into an art form or in this case a piece of jewellery

Ursula Hilz artist and designer. Born in rural Switzerland.
Works in typography, graphics. Since moving to London 10 years
ago, Ursula's work has focused on location and place. She creates
typographic maps of the worlds best-known cities.
Map of Paris
Map of Rome.
Central New York.

Greater London.

Close up of Greater London.

I chose this artist because of her work with typography. The brief
I am doing at the moment is Data and I feel this research fits nicely
into the brief. I do think her work is stylish and has movement in the images.

The Lowry Gallery, Salford Quays.

Went to see the Lowry collection on the Salford Quays it's the first time I've been to this gallery and was very impressed with the modern setting. A very well laid out gallery, well lit and easy to access.
Great to see LS.Lowry's pictures together. Much to my delight Peter Blake also had an exhibition there too.

Pictures at the exhibition.

Sorry, some of the images are small or not too sharp... not allowed to take photographs while I was there. So had to rely on the website photographs.
Peter Blake's exhibition is amazing and well worth going to see. I last saw him at Liverpool Tate roughly 6 years ago. This exhibition is to celebrate his 80th birthday year.

Data

This brief is about Data. For the first part of the brief all the students stood in a line line to play Chinese whispers. The first person was given the brief and passed the information to next person and so on. The last person's brief was very different to the first person's brief, like graph paper ! The information passed to me was..... go to the library and choose some books for graphs, words, and numbers. With this information I went to the library to choose books for the next part of the brief.
This is my choice of books: Decision and Discrete Mathematics and Field Hyrogeology. From these two books I created drawings from some of the images inside the books. Also I wanted to mark make using cardboard/wood objects as well as pen/brush.

Drawing from Decision and Discrete Mathematics.
Black oil bar, pen and liquid paper pen.

Another drawing from Decision and Discrete Mathematics.
Dripped ink with round marks made from cardboard object and filled
with photocopied numbers from the above book and photocopied text
 from my diary.

Again another drawing from the mathematics book.
I did use a brush for the white gouache paint.

These are the objects I used for the mark making of the above
pictures.

This is a personal data drawing. Photocopiered my passport pages
and the diary pages from one of my holidays in India and mark making over them in ink.
Not turned out as I would have liked the V signs look like bird feet and this was not the mark
 I wanted !

These are the objects I used for the above image.

A black liner pen was used for the mark making in this image.
This drawing is from the book Field Hydrogeology.

The above image is very striking to look at and the
mathematics pictures above are interesting to look
at. I am really enjoying the Data project. Great
trying the different information data available
and changing it into a piece of art work.

Matisse

Henri Matisse born 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambresis (Nord).
Died. 1954.
Painter and sculptor.

the Hotel Regina in Nice-Cimirz.      (1950 )

After drawing with my right hand and then drawing with a bamboo stick I realise how difficult
this must have been for Matisse. Yet he drew amazing pictures and images with his very long paint
brush and bamboo stick. As he became infirmed this did not stop him producing  art.  The images
below show Henri Matisse in his studio cutting out the shapes for his pictures shown below.

Henri Matisse was a very interesting artist, who started in life as a clerk in a law office.
Because of ill health Matisse started to paint. At 21 years old this was the turning point
of his life. He still worked in the office at the lawyers where he would decorate his books with
flowers and faces. Every morning he would attend a drawing class at the Ecole Quentin
de La Tour which specialised in tapestry and textile design. Lunch time he would spend
his time painting and then return to work. In 1891 Matisse abandoned law. His life as a artist
began. I love Matisse's work the colours, shapes and the fluid lines that he uses. What a loss
to the art world if Henri Matisse decided to pursue his career as a lawyer.

Black and White Data Drawings

The task was to use only pencil, graphite, charcoal or black oil bar.
The idea of this task was to use other ways of mark making. Using left,
hand if right handed or vice ver'sa. Drawing with sticks or other objects to change
the mark we make.

The drawing rule for this image. Use a H pencil drawing
with left hand (if right handed) a circle with the lines
no more than 3mm apart for 30 minutes.Keep going
even if you feel your hand is going to drop off !!

This drawings rule is taping a piece of charcoal onto a bamboo
stick and tuck up your sleeve. Draw a circle again this time for 20 minutes.

The above drawings are to represent  200 year old tree rings.

The rule for this drawing, is to draw a maze. Again for 30
minutes ( I took 10 minutes). I used a oil bar for this mark
making.  I like the two tone effect from using the oil bar.

Culture Show

I watched the Culture Show last Wednesday night. A fabulous show, which starred Yayoi Kusama at Tate Modern ( which I will certainly visit in March), Richard Wilson and a very exciting light show by Angus Farquhar. I thought the show highlighted the lecture on Data last Tuesday 4 th December very nicely.

This is a clip of Yayoi Kusama showing some of her work, present and past. Kusama at Tate modern is a beautiful installation using lights, mirrors and water. Well worth viewing this short video.

Slipstream.

Richard Wilson's installation Slipstream is based on and I quote " Sense of velocity and movement of a stunt plane.
This installation is known as" Transpose the thrill of an airshow " and is going to be installed in Heathrow's Terminal 2 in 2014.

Bexhill Pavilion." Hang on a minute lads, got a great idea."
Richard Wilson's rooftop sculpture based on "The Italian Job" film for the London 2012 Festival.

Angus Farquhar's light event at Arthur's Seat in
Edinburgh. 2500 runners and walkers wearing specially designed light suits. Creating a mass of light and colour
on the city's most famous hill.

Fossil Record.

Birch Diptych.

These are examples of Mary's work.
Mary Bourne works principally in natural stone using variety of techniques, caving, sandblasting, heat and polishing.

This is her quote about trees " Trees deflect wind and hold onto the soil; they are an important crop, providing income and employment. But they are also more than this; as you pass through the
landscape they are hooks to hang your thoughts on and silent watchers of your passage."

Regeneration.

Mountain Flower.

Bourne produces a sculpture that you want to pick up and touch the lovely smooth texture they appear to have. They are so rustic, yet very sophisticated pieces of art that would look good in a city or in a rural setting.
