Ursula Hilz artist and designer. Born in rural Switzerland.
Works in typography, graphics. Since moving to London 10 years
ago, Ursula's work has focused on location and place.She creates
typographic maps of the worlds best-known cities.

I chose this artist because of her work with typography. The brief  
I am doing at the moment is Data and I feel this research fits nicely 
into the brief. I do think her work is stylish and has movement in the images. 






 

The Lowry Gallery, Salford Quays.

Went to see the Lowry collection on the Salford Quays it's the first time I've been to this gallery and was very impressed with the modern setting. A very well laid out gallery, well lit and easy to access.
Great to see LS.Lowry's pictures together. Much to my delight Peter Blake also had an exhibition there too.

Sorry, some of the images are small or not too sharp... not allowed to take photographs while I was there. So had to rely on the website photographs.
Peter Blake's exhibition is amazing and well worth going to see. I last saw him at Liverpool Tate roughly 6 years ago.This exhibition is to celebrate his 80th birthday year.

Data

This brief is about Data. For the first part of the brief all the students stood in a line line to play Chinese whispers. The first person was given the brief and passed the information to next person and so on. The last person's brief was very different to the first person's brief, like graph paper ! The information passed to me was..... go to the library and choose some books for graphs, words, and numbers. With this information I went to the library to choose books for the next part of the brief.
This is my choice of books: Decision and Discrete Mathematics and Field Hyrogeology. From these two books I created drawings from some of the images inside the books. Also I wanted to mark make using cardboard/wood objects as well as pen/brush.

I did use a brush for the white gouache paint. 

These are the objects I used for the mark making of the above
pictures.

This is a personal data drawing. Photocopiered my passport pages
and the diary pages from one of my holidays in India and mark making over them in ink.
Not turned out as I would have liked the V signs look like bird feet and this was not the mark
 I wanted !

The above image is very striking to look at and the
mathematics pictures above are interesting to look
at. I am really enjoying the Data project. Great  
trying the different information data available
and changing it into a piece of art work.

After drawing with my right hand and then drawing with a bamboo stick I realise how difficult

this must have been for Matisse. Yet he drew amazing pictures and images with his very long paint

brush and bamboo stick. As he became infirmed this did not stop him producing  art.  The images

below show Henri Matisse in his studio cutting out the shapes for his pictures shown below.

Henri Matisse was a very interesting artist, who started in life as a clerk in a law office.

Because of ill health Matisse started to paint. At 21 years old this was the turning point

of his life. He still worked in the office at the lawyers where he would decorate his books with

flowers and faces. Every morning he would attend a drawing class at the Ecole Quentin

de La Tour which specialised in tapestry and textile design. Lunch time he would spend

his time painting and then return to work. In 1891 Matisse abandoned law. His life as a artist

began. I love Matisse's work the colours, shapes and the fluid lines that he uses. What a loss

to the art world if Henri Matisse decided to pursue his career as a lawyer.
